BASEBALL VACATION 2008 WAS GREAT! Not only did I see the four games that I had planned, but I also made an unplanned visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY! That kind of put the icing on the cake for the whole trip. I also visited a place that I had no idea would end up on my baseball website - the Arlington National Cemetery.
That's right. My wife and I visited the Cemetery on 8/26 before the Nationals Game just as a non-baseball activity. However, when I was reading the cemetery tourist guide, under "sports", I saw that Abner Doubleday was listed He is the Civil War General who was credited with organizing the first "official" baseball game in 1839 in Cooperstown NY. That is why they chose Cooperstown to be home of the HOF when they started building it in the 1930's. It has, however, been discovered that baseball does dates back prior to Cooperstown, and some even challenge the idea that Doubleday had anything to do with baseball at all. It's a long interesting debate, but it is safe to say that regardless of if he had any influence in baseball or not, he was not the inventor. Look up Abner Doubleday on wikipedia.com if you want to know more about that subject.
I will have a new link, "PLACES", added to this site soon, which will have pictures of my visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the grave of Abner Doubleday. I was happy to see that the Hall of Fame not only allowed flash photography in their museum, but encouraged it!
